DFU refers to Device Firmware Update and it is a state that you can put your iPhone in where it can interface with iTunes but doesn’t load the iPhone Operating system or boot loader (this is how it differs from recovery mode.) DFU mode allows your iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch to be restored from any state.
DFU mode is primarily accessed by most iPhone or iPad users when they want to change the firmware on their device. It is particularly useful if you want to downgrade to a prior iPhone firmware or operating system than the one the device is currently running. DFU mode can also come in handy if you want to install custom firmware that is required if you want to jailbreak your device or unlock the SIM.
This means that if you upgraded to iOS 9 and for some reason want to revert back to iOS 8, DFU mode can help you do this easily.
Follow these very simple steps if you want to enter DFU mode on your iPhone/iPad.
Step 1: Connect your iPhone to your computer and then launch iTunes. Turn off the device by holding the power button at the top of the iPhone.
Step 2: Next, you need to hold down the power and home buttons together for 10 seconds and the release the power button. Keep holding the Home button until you see a message on iTunes that an iPhone in recovery mode has been detected.
Step 3: Once your device’s screen goes completely black, your device has successfully entered DFU mode.
Even though the screen is black, the device can still interface with iTunes or a custom firmware client for jail-breaking purposes.
If however you see the restore logo, iTunes logo or a message on your iPhone screen, you are not in DFU mode but in standard recovery mode.If this happens repeat the process in the steps above until you see a screen that is completely black.
The easiest way to get out of DFU mode is to hold down the Home and Power buttons on the device while it is still connected to iTunes.
Then just hit the power button to reboot the device normally.
This should safely allow you to exit recovery mode for all iOS devices including iPod Touch.
It is not uncommon for your iPhone or iPad to get stuck in DFU mode. Most of the time, this can happen due to the user trying to downgrade a jail broken device to regular iOS using the iTunes restore feature. It important to note that this can’t be done and may result in your device getting stuck in DFU mode.
